ProMIS™ surgical simulator
ProMIS™ is an innovative simulator for learning the basic skills and techniques of minimally invasive surgery. ProMIS™ uniquely enables users to interact with virtual and physical models in the same unit while providing accurate, comprehensive feedback on performance.

The surgeon sets up in the same way as a real procedure by placing ports in the correct position, inserting trocars and using the appropriate instruments. This gives complete degrees of freedom and real tactile feedback when interacting with a physical object. Instruments can be exchanged, withdrawn and reinserted. Audio cues contribute to the realistic learning experience.
ProMIS' holistic design means that surgeons can train as a team - simulating the real OR environment, including communication and team-working.
Designed to deliver required learning outcomes
  • The ProMIS™ Basic Skills Curriculum includes:
  • Laparoscope Orientation
  • Instrument Handling
  • Dissection
  • Diathermy
  • Suturing and Intracorporeal Knot-tying

The ProMIS™ Curriculum is based on validated approaches to skill development and is designed to integrate easily into existing curricula. It has been developed in collaboration with recognized surgical advisors around the world.
Modules may use virtual or physical models - depending on the learning needs. Physical models provide real haptic feedback.
Each Module is segmented into Tasks and Levels, offering a clear path to skill-building. Not only are the Modules segmented clearly, but the system has been designed to make localization and customization possible.

    Validated metrics
The scientifically-validated metrics in ProMIS™ enable new standards of surgical training and performance measurement.
ProMIS analyses performance by tracking instruments in 3D space. The key measures are time taken, path length, and smoothness - the degree to which movements are fluid or erratic.
Once a task is completed, the user is immediately presented with a summary of their performance. From here, they can also see a graphical playback of their instrument use. In Tasks using physical models, they may also view a video playback.
Detailed metrics are given in summary, and for left and right hand as well as for each step of the task. These records are stored for later review by the user or the tutor. The tutor can also export records and metrics for group reports - or to incorporate into research projects.

    Learning management system
ProMIS™ is designed to integrate into existing curricula and to facilitate localisation and customisation. A toolkit enables some changes to be done at local level.
User records are stored for later review by the user or the tutor. The tutor may also export records and metrics for group reports - or to incorporate into research projects.
ProMIS™ is designed to be easily upgraded with new software downloaded remotely or via CD and new Tasks and models being issued to fit the existing system.
     Customisable, upgradeable, expandable
Image   ProMIS™ is simple to maintain and operate, requiring minimal technical expertise to install and use. It is robust - designed to withstand heavy use as well as movement and storage.
A Windows™-based interface means a familiar environment of functionality and menus as well as exportability to programs such as Excel and Word.
Being PC-based, upgrades and new modules are easily integrated via secure download over the Internet and/or a CD.
